Plan a smoother visit to Jiuzhaigou’s turquoise lakes, layered waterfalls and forested valleys. Understand the ticket system, use the park shuttle efficiently, and choose a route that fits your time and travel season.
Start planning
Jiuzhaigou is best understood as a large, branching national park rather than a single walking trail. Its three main valleys form a Y shape: Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley branch from the central Nuorilang area, while Shuzheng Valley leads back toward the entrance.
For most first-time visitors, the practical strategy is to use the included sightseeing shuttle to reach the upper sections, then explore selected stretches on foot along the boardwalks. This avoids spending too much of the day walking beside the park road and helps you focus on the lakes and waterfalls that interest you most.
If you have only one day, prioritize Rize Valley, the Long Lake and Five-Color Pond area, and selected stops in Shuzheng Valley. A slower two-day visit gives you more time for photography and quieter boardwalk sections, subject to the park’s current ticket rules.
Admission and the in-park sightseeing bus are generally sold as separate components. The shuttle is essential for most visitors because the scenic area is extensive and the main attractions are spread across different branches.
| Season | Admission (adult) | Sightseeing bus | Combined reference total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak season April 1 – November 15 | ¥190 | ¥90 | ¥280 |
| Off-season November 16 – March 31 | ¥80 | ¥80 | ¥160 |
These are standard adult reference prices published on the park’s English visitor-information page. Discount eligibility, ticket products and operating arrangements may change.
| Period | Opening | Closing |
|---|---|---|
| Apr 1 – Nov 15 | 7:30 a.m. | 6:00 p.m. |
| Nov 16 – Mar 31 | 8:30 a.m. | 6:00 p.m. |
Last admission, shuttle dispatch and holiday schedules can differ.
The park’s sightseeing buses connect the entrance, Nuorilang Tourist Center and the upper branches. Bus dispatch can vary according to visitor flow, so use the current route board and staff instructions on the day.

A higher-elevation branch known for its broad mountain scenery and striking lakes.
The central route back toward the entrance, with a sequence of lakes, waterfalls and village landscapes.
This is a planning framework, not a guaranteed bus timetable. Adjust the order to the shuttle routes operating on your visit date.
Enter early and take the park shuttle toward the upper Rize Valley stops available that day. Work your way down between selected lakes.
Return to Nuorilang Tourist Center for a rest and lunch. Check the live bus direction before continuing to the Zechawa branch.
Choose Long Lake and Five-Color Pond if time allows. Finish with selected Shuzheng Valley stops on the way back to the entrance.
Jiuzhaigou changes noticeably through the year. The best season depends on whether you care most about autumn foliage, full-flow waterfalls, spring growth or winter scenery.
| Season | What to expect | Best for | Planning notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring Mar–May | Fresh growth and a quieter atmosphere. | Fewer crowds and changing scenery. | Weather can be cool; some high sections may remain restricted. |
| Summer Jun–Aug | Lush forests, fuller streams and powerful waterfalls. | Waterfall photography. | Expect school-holiday demand and possible rain. |
| Autumn Sep–Oct | Colourful forests reflected in turquoise lakes. | Classic autumn scenery. | One of the busiest periods. Weekends and public holidays can be crowded. |
| Winter Nov–Feb | Snow, ice formations and a quieter atmosphere. | Blue ice and off-season travel. | Cold conditions may close some high-elevation trails. |

Comfort & safety
Jiuzhaigou’s entrance area is around 2,000 metres above sea level, while the Long Lake area is around 3,100 metres. Visitors may notice the thinner air more at the higher stops, especially if they have travelled quickly from a low-altitude city.
Walk at a steady pace, take breaks, drink water and avoid strenuous activity if you feel unwell. Keep warm when getting off the shuttle, as temperatures can change between the entrance and higher sections.
Build your route around the three valleys, seasonal conditions and the time you have available.
One full day is enough to see several major highlights if you use the shuttle efficiently. Two days allow a slower pace and more time for walking and photography.
For most visitors, yes. The park is large and its main scenic areas are spread across three connected valleys. The shuttle saves substantial time between distant sections.
Many first-time visitors prioritize Rize Valley for its famous lakes and waterfalls, then visit Zechawa Valley and selected parts of Shuzheng Valley. Follow the day’s shuttle arrangements because bus dispatch may change.
Late September and October are commonly recommended, but foliage timing changes each year. Crowds are also heavier during this period, so book accommodation and park admission ahead.
It is not a good idea to combine a full Jiuzhaigou visit with Huanglong in one day. They are separate scenic areas and the transfer takes time.
The entrance is around 2,000 metres and some upper areas reach about 3,100 metres. Many visitors manage comfortably, but take it slowly, especially at higher stops.
