Chengdu Panda Base
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the most famous and accessible place to see giant pandas in the world. Located just 10 kilometers north of downtown Chengdu, it houses the largest captive population of pandas and offers an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Where to see pandas
The base is designed like a large park, with different enclosures for adult pandas, sub-adults, and cubs. When you enter, we highly recommend heading straight to the adult enclosures and the nursery (Sunshine Nursery) first, as this is where the most activity happens.
Tickets and opening hours
The base is typically open from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, but it is highly recommended to arrive right at opening. Tickets can be booked online in advance, often requiring your passport number for foreign visitors. Prices are reasonable, and the ticket covers access to all public enclosures.
Best time to visit
Pandas are most active in the early morning when they are fed breakfast. By late morning, they usually fall asleep and become very still. Therefore, arriving between 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM gives you the best chance to see them climbing, playing, and eating bamboo. Avoid visiting during Chinese public holidays if you prefer a quieter experience.
